21-0 Win
A beautiful, warm sunny day greeted both teams in Shanganagh Park as the Mariners hosted the Giants in their 3rd game of the season. With the sting of a close defeat still lingering, the goal was to fight hard and get back to winning ways.
As it turned out, that fight was more like a fatality that a Mortal Kombat character would have been proud of. The Giants, who were still looking for their first win, were unfortunately in the wrong place at the wrong time as the day finished with more clouds in the sky then they had runs on the board! On the Day, the Mariners were too good, and the final score was 21-0.
The pitching for the Mariners was handled by Jack Fairbairn and Daniel Woodburne. Strikeouts, walks, hits…in a game like this the only stat that matters is a combined shutout. Jack took the start and Daniel came on in the 5th to close it out.
In a game like this, everyone performed well, stayed professional and did their job. However, there was one standout performance from Dan Sweatland who had multiple hits, 4 RBIs and 2 Triples. One of those Triples might also have been an Inside the Park Home Run, if the 3rd Base Coach had a little more nerve and pushed all-in. Incredible performance from the Boston native who gives himself a nice early 33rd birthday present with an MVP Award.
Next game for The Champs is a Thursday evening matchup against the Dublin Spartans in Corkagh Park on May 5th. This game will have a bit more meaning for the Mariners as they look for revenge for their narrow defeat as well as top spot in the league.
